What is a Winnebago Solis?

The Winnebago Solis is a compact Class B camper van built on the Ram ProMaster chassis. Designed as a ready-made alternative to DIY and custom builds, the Solis stands out for its versatility, simplicity, and pop-top roof. Although simple, it’s a highly functional van. Winnebago makes deliberate design choices to keep the van focused on the essentials that matter most for travel. So, don’t expect any bells and whistles.

pocket 36a ratingThe Solis is not only a great basecamp for adventure—it’s also comfortable enough to double as a home (it has a kitchen, bathroom, beds, and seating space). It’s suitable for extended trips, weekend getaways, full-time living, 3-season travel, and even off-grid adventures lasting 2 to 4 days.

With floor plans that accommodate solo travelers, couples, or small families of up to four, the Solis is very practical and efficient. At just 17 feet long in its shortest version (the other two are 19 and 21 feet long), it’s the smallest motorhome in Winnebago’s lineup. Owners appreciate how easy it is to drive, park almost anywhere, and even use as a daily vehicle.

How’s the Winnebago Solis Made?

The Winnebago Solis starts with a fully assembled Ram ProMaster chassis, complete with the cab and cargo van body. Winnebago purchases the empty van and transforms it into a fully functional camper by installing custom cabinetry, beds, a kitchen, bathroom, electrical, plumbing systems, and other RV components. Notably, the Solis is made in Forest City, Iowa.

Winnebago Solis Review: The Interior

Here’s a review of Winnebago Solis’ interior features:

1. Sleeping Arrangement of the Winnebago Solis Class B Motorhome

pocket campervan owner experience

The Winnebago Solis 59P and 59PX sleep a total of 4. They come with a cross-coach Murphy platform bed that folds up, allowing access through the middle of the van to the rear doors. A large 51×75-inch bed is available in the pop-top roof. In addition, the 59P has a front-facing expandable sofa bed option.

The smaller Solis Pocket 36A also features a Murphy bed that sleeps 2, a small dinette that sleeps 1, and no pop-top option. Pocket 36B comes with a convertible dinette (53×75-inch bed) that sleeps 2 and an optional pop-top bed (51×75 inch) that accommodates another 2. If you’re traveling solo, the 36B dinette can be transformed into a 30×75-inch bed for one, helping minimize setup time. Many owners say the mattresses are comfortable.

2. Kitchen

All Winnebago Solis floor plans include a compact yet functional kitchen located just inside the sliding door. It has all the essential features, like a two-burner Suburban gas range with a glass cover, a stainless-steel sink, and a 3 cubic-foot (12V) refrigerator that’s accessible from inside and outside.

Other highlights include an extended laminate countertop, pull-out countertop extension (59P, 59PX), multiple drawers under the counter, and multiple overhead cabinets above the dinette area and bed. The 36A and 36B also have a fold-down exterior table, while the 59P and 59PX have a spice rack.

3. Living Area of the Winnebago Solis Campervan

is winnebago solis reliable

The living areas of the Solis models are thoughtfully designed for flexibility and function:

  • Solis Pocket 36A: Features a small convertible face-me dinette with a movable table behind the driver’s seat. It seats 2 and serves as a workspace, dining area, lounge, and 1-person bed at night.
  • Solis Pocket 36B: Offers a larger face-me dinette along the driver’s side that doubles as seating during the day and a bed at night.
  • Solis 59P: The main seating area includes two passenger seats located behind the cab. The driver and passenger seats swivel to face these seats, creating a cozy lounge setup with a removable table in between. This model also offers a sofa bed option in place of the Murphy bed, adding comfortable lounging space for two to three additional people.
  • Solis 59PX: Similar to the 59P but has no sofa bed option.

Note
: The Murphy beds in the Solis models are not designed for daytime seating, as they sit too high off the floor to function comfortably as sofas. Plus, the overhead cabinets limit headroom. When not in use, one half of the Murphy bed folds up to allow access through the van and create more open space near the rear.

4. Bathroom of the Winnebago Solis

All Winnebago Solis models include a wet bathroom—except the Pocket 36A, which comes with a portable cassette toilet stored beneath the rear-facing dinette seat. In the Pocket 36B, the 25″ x 34″ wet bath occupies the entire rear of the van and can function as a dry bath when the removable cassette toilet is put outside. The bath can also be accessed from the rear doors and features a stainless-steel round sink, wardrobe, and medicine cabinet.

ram promaster campervan redditIn the Solis 59P and 59PX, the wet bath is centrally located and measures 31″ x 24″ and comes with a removable clothes rod and tissue holder. Other Solis wet bath features include a flexible showerhead with dual control faucet, shower curtain, and mirror. Also, all Winnebago Solis models include an exterior shower setup behind the van. To use it, open the rear doors, secure them in place with the provided support rod, and hang the included shower curtain for privacy.

5. Cab Area

The Winnebago Solis cab features a swivel/slide/recline cab seats that integrate with the living space. Many drivers feel the seats are comfortable enough for long drives, while others feel they are too high.

Other key cab details include a touchscreen radio, rearview monitor system, cellphone charger, and adjustable headrests on cab seats. You’ll also have power steering, push-button start, 3-point seat belts, power mirrors, and cruise control.

6. Passenger Seats of the Winnebago Solis Van

Winenbago Solis class b rv reviews and ratings

The Solis Pocket 36A and 36B each have three seat belts: two in the cab and one on the forward-facing dinette seat. The Solis 59P (Murphy bed model) and the 59PX both offer four seat belts—two in the cab and two on the passenger seats directly behind it. The Solis 59P sofa bed option includes two additional 3-point seat belts in the rear convertible sofa, bringing the total to six.

7. Pop Top Roof Review of the Winnebago Solis

All the Winnebago Solis campervans, except the Pocket 36A have an optional pop-top with a fiberglass roof and canvas walls. The sleeping area is spacious, measuring 51″ x 75″, and includes three screened windows for cross-ventilation. Plus, it is tall enough for you to sit up. Additional features include an access ladder, integrated LED light strip, and a conveniently located outlet with USB and 12V connections.

8. Storage Space of the Winnebago Solis

All Winnebago Solis models offer well-thought-out storage solutions throughout the interior. You’ll find overhead cabinets with magnetic doors above the kitchen, dinette, and sleeping areas, as well as lower cabinets beneath the kitchen sink. Small storage cubbies are strategically placed for quick-access items, plus there’s a deep over-cab shelf.

The most substantial storage area in the Solis 59P, 59PX, and Pocket 36A comes from the space beneath the rear Murphy bed as well as below-floor storage. When the bed is folded up, it creates a large, open cargo area. The Solis 59PX takes storage even further with an extended rear gear garage measuring 18×72 inches. It has tie-down points to secure your gear during travel and is ideal for storing up to 2 bikes (front wheels removed), folding chairs, totes, or large bins.

9. Climate Control

A 13,500 BTU air conditioner is standard in the 36A, 36B, and 59PX, with directional vents and simple dial controls. It’s optional in the 59P. The Solis 36B, 59P, and 59PX come equipped with the Truma Combi® Eco system, providing heat and hot water.

The 36A uses the Truma® VarioHeat™, a compact furnace suited for smaller interiors—both options offer efficient, quiet heating for 3-season travel. In addition, the vans come with a remote-controlled powered ventilator fan (36A, 36B, 59P, and 59PX without pop-top).

10. Insulation

is winnebago solis a quality camper vanThe Winnebago Solis features CNC foam and reflective insulation in the walls, ceiling, and doors, along with honeycomb composite insulated flooring. However, it’s not fully insulated for winter use. Temperature extremes can affect comfort, especially in the pop-top and the rear area. It’s best for three-season travel.

11. Safety Features of Winnebago Solis

Safety features include LP, smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors, plus a fire extinguisher. Others are driver and passenger airbags, crosswind assist, collision warning, a pedestrian automatic emergency braking system, and post-collision braking. The vans also have up to six 3-point seatbelts, child seat tether anchors, ground fault interrupter, fog lamps, and a rearview camera.

Winnebago Solis Review: Exterior and Construction

winnebago solis 59p review

The Winnebago Solis is a compact Class B exterior built on a Ram ProMaster van. The face of the campervan is characterized by a bold, utilitarian design. It features a wide grille with the prominent RAM logo at the center, flanked by large, angular headlights that offer excellent visibility. The short hood slopes downward for improved driver sightlines, while the broad front bumper gives it a sturdy appearance.

  • Solar – Does the Winnebago Solis have solar? Yes, Solis vans are equipped with a 220-watt flexible panel with a controller on pop-top models (36B, 59P, 59PX). 190-watt solar panel with controller (36B) and 170-watt solar panel with controller (59P & 59PX without pop-top). It also features an auxiliary start circuit, AC/DC load center with 55-amp converter/charger, automatic dual-battery charge control, and a coach battery disconnect system.
  • Generator – The 59PX comes with an ultra-quiet 2,800-watt Cummins Onan gas generator. It is mounted on a tray under the van behind the rear axle. Although the generator is rugged, its clearance is not great. It’s the same height as the axle.
  • Exterior Colors – Solis vans come in 4 shades—bright white, bright silver, ceramic gray, and sandstone (59PX only). The Deep Cherry Red option is not available in 2025 models.
  • Sliding entry door equipped with an integrated zippered screen and magnetic closure that snaps shut automatically
  • Ground clearance of 6.5 to 7 inches
  • Rear screen door
  • Porch light with an interior switch on the passenger side
  • Driver side service light with an interior switch
  • Assist bar
  • Exterior wash station behind passenger seat in 59P & 59PX
  • Aluminum running board with a logoed tread and pet loop attachment
  • Rod and privacy screen (provided for rear annex)
  • 10′ sewer hose
  • Heated drainage system
  • Gray tank dump on driver side

Winnebago Solis Chassis Review

All Winnebago Solis models are built on the Ram ProMaster cargo van platform, featuring a 280-hp 3.6L V6 gas engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It includes a 180-amp alternator, 4-wheel ABS brakes, and a 3,500-lb rated trailer hitch with a 350-lb. maximum tongue weight. All Solis models are front-wheel drive (FWD).

Winnebago Solis MPG and Fuel Capacity

How many MPG does Solis get? The van is very fuel efficient, averaging 17 to 18 MPG. However, some report 15–16 MPG. Others achieve up to
24 MPG on highways and around 20 MPG in cities. All models come with a 24-gallon fuel tank.

Optional Features of the Winnebago Solis Class B Motorhome

winnebago solis models

Our Winnebago Solis review also lists all the optional features of the van:

  • Fiberglass Pop-top – Optional on the 36B and standard (with option to remove) on the 59P and 59PX floor plans
  • Sofa bed with two 3-point seat belts (59P, but not available with National Park Foundation Package)

  • kWh lithium battery, 5-in-1 power management controller—3,600-watt inverter, inverter-charger, DC-DC converter, MPPT solar charger and alternator charger

Winnebago Solis Performance: Off-road, Winter, Full-time Living, and Boondocking

Is the Winnebago Solis reliable in less than ideal RV camping situations? Let’s find out:

  • Off-road RVing – The Solis isn’t built for rugged off-roading but handles dirt roads and light trails well, especially with all-terrain tires.
  • Winter Camping – It has three-season insulation, and the water tanks and lines are all interior. But for true winter camping, additional upgrades like tank heaters and insulation are needed.
  • Full-time Living – The Solis’ construction is sturdy enough to handle year-round use. But due to its small size, it suits solo travelers, couples, or pet owners.
  • Boondocking – Limited by the small cassette toilet; off-grid stays can only last 2–4 days without access to an external toilet.

Winnebago Solis Warranty Review

The Winnebago Solis comes with a 12-month/24,000-mile basic warranty covering the coach portion. The Ram ProMaster chassis includes a 36-month/36,000-mile limited chassis warranty and a 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty for added peace of mind.

But is Winnebago’s warranty reliable? Yes, Winnebago’s warranty is generally dependable, with fewer service complaints compared to many other RV manufacturers. However, the key issue isn’t the warranty itself—it’s service access. Choose a dealer that’s convenient for warranty work, as repairs may require returning to the original selling dealer.

Their Factory Service Center in Forest City, Iowa, is the best place to have warranty work done. The location even has electric hookup spots for customers. Plus, repairs not covered are more affordable compared to regular service shops.

Winnebago Solis RV Customer Service and Contacts

Winnebago is widely recognized for its strong reputation in customer service, often outperforming other RV brands. Their team is responsive, helpful, and knowledgeable when it comes to addressing questions and resolving issues.

However, many Winnebago dealers can be challenging to work with if you didn’t buy the RV from them. Some dealers may delay or deny service, and a few owners have experienced long hold times when contacting Winnebago directly.

Winnebago Contacts
are (800) 537-1885 (toll-free) or (641) 585-6939. To connect with other owners online, check out the Facebook group named Winnebago Solis Owners and Wannabees or the Solis Winnebago Owners community on Class B Forums. For chassis-specific discussions, check out the Ram Promaster Forum.

Winnebago Solis Reviews from Owners

winnebago solis problems

Below is an overview of Winnebago Solis quality based on feedback from various review platforms and forums, complete with links to original sources.

Keep in Mind: RV reviews can be one-sided. Dissatisfied owners are often more likely to share their experiences, while satisfied customers may stay silent. To get a fair picture, read both positive and negative Winnebago Solis reviews and pay attention to patterns or repeated issues mentioned across multiple reviews.

★ Winnebago Solis Quality Review – Picked up a Solis in October and live in it 60% of the time while traveling from work. So far, so good. Working and living in the PNW is chilly and wet, but the van has proven to be a capable and comfortable option. Winnebago offers a lot in these models for the price. Happy with the decision so far…

★  Winnebago Solis Van Review on Features – Top notch equipment. Furnace, water heater, stove, fixtures. Just excellent controls and useable features. Outdoor or indoor showers. AC that works. Whisper generator included. Comfortable beds and swivel chairs and tinted windows with sliding screens and zippered covers… Touch lighting, quality locking cabinet hardware, water, and AC/DC outlets everywhere.

★ Winnebago Solis Reddit Review on Sleeping Arrangement – I have a Solis 59PX. The main bed is a double and should handle two people 6′ or shorter. The pop top is a large twin. Tight for two adults but doable.

★ Owner Review of Solis campervan – I also have a 2021 59P and love its simplicity. The Sumo Springs are a great upgrade, and now I plan on getting a spare tire carrier. The lack of a spare tire (even a donut-sized one) gives me a little apprehension when I travel with it outside of normal, heavily trafficked roads.

★ Winnebago Solis Owner Experience – I have the 59P model without the Genny and love it so far. Bathroom door sucks, but I replaced it already with a slider. So far no issues; the tank under is just grey water, Cassette toilet. So far no issues, wife uses it almost every day as she likes it better than her car. We paid $78K new last fall on a 22 chassis.

★ Review of Winnebago Solis Problem – We bought a 2022 Winnebago Solis Pocket with 5k miles in February…the transmission fell out of the van (not an exaggeration)! It turned out the transmission had already been replaced once just before we bought it. Now we’re waiting for another transmission – 3 months later. Turns out there are over 4,000 on back order and none are being made.

★ Winnebago Solis Review of Fit and Finish – Winnebago packs a lot into these models. Some of the finish is not the best (caulking in shower, roof solar panel, wood trim) but considering all that you do get, I am not complaining too much.

★  Winnebago Solis Built Quality – The 59P is perfect for 4. It drives well enough that we sold our other car (Impreza) and I drive this around town. 90k is a decent price these days. There are competitor models from Thor, but I think the Winnebago build is superior. If you have less people you could consider deleting the pop-top. Battery system is fine.

Pros and Cons of the Winnebago Solis Camper Van

winnebago solis issues

Here are some advantages and downsides of Winnebago Solis Vans:

Pros of Winnebago Solis Camper Van

  1. The manufacturer deliberately uses very simple but functional features. No bells and whistles that will break.
  2. Separate control panels, switches, and buttons for each system—unlike all-in-one touchscreen setups, where a single failure can disable every feature.
  3. Compact size (17–21 feet) allows for easy maneuvering and fits in standard parking spots as well as tight boondocking spaces.
  4. More affordable than many camper vans, with new models starting around $90,000 (36A).
  5. Impressive fuel economy: 17–18 MPG on average, with some owners reporting up to 24 MPG on the highway.
  6. Well-equipped for livability—includes two beds, toilet, shower, stove, fridge/freezer, solar, generator, clever storage throughout, and a dinette/workspace.
  7. Sleeps up to four (36B, 59P, 59PX)
  8. Solis 59P has a sofa bed option and can seat up to six.
  9. All seats have three-point seat belts; select models (36A, 36B, 59P) include child seat tether anchors.
  10. Swiveling front seats expand usable living space.
  11. Rear Murphy bed folds up when not in use to open up floor space.
  12. Roomy pop-top with 3 zippered windows for airflow and added sleeping space.
  13. Sliding and rear door screens let you enjoy the outside without inviting bugs.
  14. Generous under-bed storage—great for camping gear, chairs, tents, and bins.
  15. The 59PX features a rear gear garage large enough to hold two bikes with front tires removed.
  16. Easy to drive with excellent visibility and a tight turning radius.
  17. The refrigerator can be accessed from both inside and outside the van.
  18. Comes with solar and battery system capable of running all essentials, like the refrigerator, phones, laptops, and a CPAP machine.
  19. Camera stays on when the van is on.
  20. 360-degree surround view camera system on the 59PX
  21. The cassette toilet can be easily emptied into any regular toilet, so there is no need to search for a dump station or sewer hookup.
  22. The Solis includes tire pressure sensors that trigger low-pressure warnings but do not display the actual tire pressures.

Cons of Winnebago Solis Camper Van

  1. Lithium batteries are not standard (come with less-efficient AGM batteries).
  2. Uses a 5-gallon cassette toilet instead of a traditional black tank setup.
  3. Interior fit and finish can be inconsistent.
  4. Low clearance on all of the Winnebago Solis models. Potential damage to the undercarriage if the van is driven over bumpy, rocky roads.
  5. 59P and 59PX lack a dedicated dinette area.
  6. Murphy bed can’t double as a daytime seating area.
  7. In the 59PX, no 120V power without running the generator, RV engine, or being plugged into shore power.
  8. Limited exterior roof storage space due to the pop-top, AC, fan, and compact van length.
  9. The generator sits low to the ground, and is not encased, exposing it to road debris and weather.
  10. The heating system seems to push more heat to the front of the cab and not where the bed is.
  11. Pop-top sleeping area gets too hot or cold fast.
  12. The 59PX loses the Maxxair roof fan due to the rooftop A/C unit.
  13. No spare tire included.
  14.  The water hose connection is inside the back door. Meaning, if you want to be on city water you have to leave the door open.
  15. With fewer Winnebago Solis owners compared to more common vans, online forum support is limited.
  16. Sliding windows aren’t great in the rain—if cracked open for ventilation, water can seep in. Unlike hinged or awning-style windows.
  17. Many reports of transmission failure on Ram ProMaster vans.
  18. The Murphy bed runs side wall to side wall, which means you’ll need to climb over your partner to reach the toilet at night.
  19. The bed length may not be enough for a tall person (6 ft+) that occasionally uses arms as pillows.
  20. Pocket 36A has no wet bath, just a cassette toilet.

Go RV Rentals’ Verdict: Is the Winnebago Solis Worth it?

winnebago solis modifications The Solis is absolutely worth considering—especially for those just starting out in RV life. While nice, it is not luxurious. Instead, it features a deliberately simple design that holds up well, even with full-time abuse. Additionally, it comes at a lower price point than many other rigs and offers above-average build quality.  The pop top is a key highlight, providing a great sleeping or lounging area with unbeatable views. The pre-installed solar and battery system helps you extend off-grid adventures. Moreover, you’ll appreciate its high fuel efficiency, easy maneuverability, smooth ride, and the ability to park it nearly anywhere. Its compact footprint makes it ideal for daily driving and stealth camping.  Even better, it includes everything a small family of 3 to 4 needs to cook, clean up, and sleep comfortably. However, for families that size, staying at campgrounds with full hookups, restrooms, showers, and picnic tables is ideal, as the van’s limited interior space and small cassette toilet can be restrictive.

What’s the Difference Between the Solis and Other Winnebago Vans

Here are the key differences between the Solis and other camper vans produced by Winnebago:

What’s the Difference Between Solis and Travato?

  • The Solis is more budget-friendly (from $143K MSRP vs $220K Travato) with a simpler setup and pop-top option.
  • The Solis interior is simple, while the Travato’s inside is refined for comfort.
  • Solis vans may suit a small family (sleep up to 4) while Travatos only suit couples (sleep only 2).
  • Travatos have a regular RV toilet, while Solis come with cassette toilets
  • Travatos are 21 ft long, while Solis vans start from 17 ft.

What’s the Difference Between Solis and Ekko?

  • The Ekko is an all-weather Class B+ (blend between Class C and B van) with AWD, large holding tanks, and full insulation.
  • Solis is smaller (Class B van), FWD, with limited off-grid and cold-weather capability.
  • Ekko is more expensive (from $215K), but built for extended, off-grid, four-season use.
  • Ekko features a Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter chassis, while Solis is on the Ram ProMaster.

What’s the Difference Between Winnebago Solis and Revel?

  • The Revel is a rugged, 4×4 adventure van on a Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit chassis with a power lift bed.
  • Solis is front-wheel drive, more affordable, and simpler—designed for casual or beginner van life.
  • Revel offers better off-road performance, but Solis is easier to drive and park.
  • Revel is large and pricier, from $210K

FAQs About Winnebago Solis Class B RVs

winnebago solis 59px review Here are some frequently asked questions about Winnebago Solis motorhomes:

How Many MPG Does the Solis Van Get?

It averages 17–19 MPG on the highway, with real-world reported values starting from around 16 MPG to 20 MPG. Some owners log up to 24 MPG on the highway.

How Much to Rent a Winnebago Solis?

The average cost to rent a Winnebago Solis is $110 to $495 a night, with most owners renting out at $220 a night. That’s the base rate, and there are often other extra RV rental costs like insurance, taxes, platform service fee, extra mileage fees, and owner add-ons.

What are the Best Winnebago Solis Alternatives?

The Thor Sequence is a direct competitor among factory-built vans. However, if you’re comparing Winnebago Solis vs. Thor Sequence, Thor doesn’t match Winnebago’s build quality and after-sales service. For custom builds, consider companies like Wayfarer Vans or Dave and Matt Vans.

The bottom line: Is Solis a Good Campervan?

Yes, the Solis is a highly versatile Class B van—ideal for long and short trips, outdoor adventures on gravel roads, full-time living, and even daily commuting. While it has a few minor drawbacks, they’re not uncommon and are generally easy to resolve thanks to its straightforward, no-frills design. In today’s market, it’s rare to find a well-built, factory-produced camper van in the U.S. with both a pop-top and a toilet, and Winnebago remains one of the few major manufacturers offering this combination.
