What is a Class C RV?

A Class C RV is a mid-sized motorhome that is built on a van or pick-up truck chassis. The most distinctive feature is the cab-over section that extends over the driver and passenger seats. This space is often used for sleeping or storage.

There are three types of Class C RVs:

  • Regular Class C – The most common type, built on a van or truck chassis with an overhead cab bunk, offering a balance of size and comfort.
  • Class B+ RV – It’s a hybrid of a camper van and a regular Class C. The front resembles a van, but it has a big boxy body built around the van chassis. Notably, it doesn’t have the bulky cab-over bunk sleeping area of a classic Class C, making it more aerodynamic. Examples are the LTV unity and Winnebago EKKO.
  • Super C – Built on a heavy-duty truck chassis with a powerful diesel engine. Their front end looks like that of a semi. These rigs offer exceptional towing capacity, ample living space, and premium luxury features. Examples are the Renegade Verona, Dynamax DX3, Newmar Supreme, and Jayco Seneca.

Class C RV Characteristics

class c motorhome rating guide
Here are some features of a Class C RV:

  • Built on a cutaway chassis—has a van or pick-up truck cab with an open passage to the living area.
  • Cab-over sleeping area—often features a bed or storage above the driver’s seat.
  • Mid-size—smaller than a Class A (bus-like coach) and bigger than a camper van (Class B). They are typically 24–40 feet in length.
  • Available with either fuel type, depending on the chassis.
  • Many models include slide-outs for added interior space.
  • Generally more affordable compared to Class A and B motorhomes.
  • Towing capability—regular Class Cs can tow a small vehicle or trailer, while super Cs can tow heavier vehicles or trailers.
  • Class C motorhome floor plans are often designed to accommodate mid-to-large families.
  • They are often two-wheel drive, with power typically sent to the rear wheels (RWD). However, AWD (all-wheel drive) and 4×4 (four-wheel drive) options are available in select models.

More attributes of a Class C RV:

  • Class C RV Sleeping Capacity – 4 to 8 people.
  • Class C RV Sizes – 24 to 40 ft. Super Cs can be up to 45 feet.
  • Dimensions of a Class C Motorhome – 24’ to 40’ length by 7’ to 8’ width by 10’ to 13’ height.
  • Class C RV Weight – 10,000 lbs to 20,000 when fully loaded. Super Cs can be up to 50,000 lbs
  • Class C RV MPG – 7 to 16 miles per gallon depending on size and model.
  • Price of a Class C RV – $90,000 to $250,000. Luxury Super Cs can exceed $500,000.

Class C RV Chassis: What is it?

which class c rv chassis is best

A chassis is a vehicle’s base platform or frame that holds the engine, transmission, suspension, wheels, and cab (driver’s area). The first thing to know is that Class C RVs are built by two manufacturers:

Cutaway Chassis Manufacturer

This manufacturer builds an incomplete van or pick-up truck chassis, essentially just the front cab (driver and passenger compartment with seating and controls) and frame of a vehicle (houses the engine, transmission, suspension, and wheels).

The back of the cab area is left empty so that a custom body, can be added later by a third-party upfitter (I.e., a Class C builder, ambulance, or box truck). Notably, a cutaway chassis has an opening that allows passage between the cab and the rear body that is later built by the second manufacturer.

The three main companies that build cut-away chassis for Class C motorhomes are Ford, Chevy, and Mercedes.

RV Body Manufacturer

An RV builder buys the cutaway chassis and then constructs living quarters behind the driver’s compartment. First, they build a frame on the truck chassis to support the motorhome floor and storage compartments. They then add the walls, roof, flooring, cab-over section, plumbing, electrical system, insulation, HVAC, furniture, exterior branding, and other house systems.

Depending on the model, the RV manufacturer may perform various chassis modifications like adding better suspensions and installing jacks. Some manufacturers stretch the wheelbase to accommodate larger floor plans when a chassis from the original manufacturer is only available in a few configurations and lengths.

They cut the chassis, add beams, use a laser to align them, weld them, sand them smooth, and paint them. Also, if a shorter wheelbase has less carrying capacity, an RV manufacturer may choose a higher capacity longer wheelbase and cut it to build a shorter coach.

Which Class C RV Chassis is Best?

The best Class C RV chassis depends on your priorities—whether you value towing capacity, fuel efficiency, drivability, easy maintenance, or overall durability. Below is a breakdown of the top chassis options for Class C motorhomes:

Ford Class C Chassis Options

Ford is beloved for its reputation for better reliability, and wider customization options. Plus, you can get parts anywhere and every shop knows how to work on it.

  • Ford Transit – Found in the newest compact Class Cs and B+ RVs.
  • Ford E-350 – Found in smaller Class C models, typically under 25 feet.
  • Ford E-450 – Used in bigger Class Cs and offers more carrying and towing capacity.
  • Ford F-550/F-600 (Super C) – Used for heavy-duty Super C motorhomes, offering diesel power and higher payloads.
  • Nearly all RV brands offer Class C RVs on the Ford chassis.

Chevy Class C Chassis Options

Chevy’s chassis is known for a quieter ride, better handling, more cabin room, and better fuel economy than Ford’s platform. However, there is a very limited number of Class C RVs with a Chevy Chassis, plus the platform comes in very few wheelbase variations. Also, RVs using the Chevy chassis often have less cargo-carrying capacity (CCC).

  • Chevy Express 3500 – Lighter-duty, ideal for compact Class C models.
  • Chevy Express 4500 – More robust than the 3500, with higher payload capacity.
  • RV brands that offer Class C RVs on a Chevy chassis include Coachman, Forest River, Gulf Stream, and Jayco.

Mercedes Benz Class C Chassis Options

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis is known for diesel efficiency, luxury cab features, smooth ride, and advanced safety tech. It’s a top choice for high-end compact Class C RVs and Class B+. However, Mercedes units have a lower towing capacity compared to Ford and Chevy models and higher upfront costs. Maintenance can be expensive due to specialized parts and few authorized service centers.

  • Sprinter 3500 – Common in smaller Class C RVs, offering fuel efficiency and maneuverability.
  • Sprinter 4500 – Higher GVWR for mid-size luxury builds.
  • RV brands that offer Class C RVs on a Mercedes chassis include Winnebago, Leisure Travel Vans, Tiffin, Pleasure-Way, Thor Motor Coach, Renegade, Fleetwood, Entegra, Airstream, and Holiday Rambler.

Super C Chassis Options

The following chassis are often used in Super C RVs for heavy-duty towing and power:

  • Ram 5500 chassis
  • Freightliner chassis
  • Peterbilt chassis
  • Volvo chassis
